Spain
From siestas to fiestas and flamenco, Spain has got the lot. The northern coast is edged by long, sandy beaches looking out onto the crystal clear Atlantic; away from the coast, the misty mountains tower over rolling hills and silvery olive groves. The lively resorts of Tossa de Mar, Blanes and Roses are all there for the taking, and dotted through the breathtaking rural scenery you'll come across quaint stone villages where you can explore the narrow cobbled streets, home to traditional Spanish bars and bodegas (make sure you sample the rich red Rioja and delicious variety of tapas!).
There are unmissable excursion opportunities, such as the terracotta mountain town of Sant Hilari with its eleventh century church nestled in the pine forests, or the town of Montserrat with its many hidden caves and countless secrets – take the funicular up the mountain to the famous Benedictine monastery, home to the legends of the Black Madonna and the Holy Grail. Wander past the whitewashed houses and fishermen's church through a labyrinth of alleyways in the village that inspired Salvador Dali, and visit the museum dedicated to him in Figueres. Stroll through the old stone buildings in the narrow, paved streets of Besalu and stock up on handpainted pottery bargains.
The medieval walled city of Girona is spectacular – its breathtaking architecture, unique charms and impressive cathedral founded in 1038 have all earned it the title of the Florence of Catalonia. Marvel at the fabulous Gaudi architecture in Barcelona, and stroll through the colourful flower stalls of Las Ramblas leading to the old harbour – the place of musicians, painters and some of the best cafés and restaurants in the city.
